Additional Educational Needs and Special Educational Needs
The Additional Educational Needs Department provides support to those students who have particular barriers to learning. In addition, this team of staff provides information to staff on strategies to best support students within the classroom across the curriculum. With the launch of the 2015 Special Educational Needs Code of Practice, the emphasis on support comes from within the classroom in order to be fully inclusive. This means that teachers utilise Quality First Teaching strategies as differentiation and the first steps in meeting the needs of all students in the classroom.
Where the needs of a student are greater than that which can be successfully met by the classroom teacher, the additional needs department will organise intervention as appropriate. We are currently able to offer one to one and small group tuition for numeracy and literacy on a weekly basis. This is delivered by our specialist intervention tutor, Miss Martin. Where a student has significant and persistent barriers to learning we may seek advice and support from our Educational Psychologist, Teresa Wheeler.
In addition to this, we have a team of highly qualified and experienced Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) and Higher Level Teaching Assistants (HLTAs) who work closely with students within the classroom, either on a one to one basis or as group support where necessary. The LSA/HLTA team can also currently provide intervention for students who have difficulty with the following:
- Speech and language
- Social interaction and communication
- Fine and gross motor skills
- Handwriting and touch typing
The SENCO is Miss D Dunlop.
